Evens Stievenart, the 24-hour Le Mans Solo Cycling Race champion tackles the Race Across America on June 15th
The 2018 12-hour cycling Borrego Springs champion and world record holder for the 2017 edition of the 24-hour Le Mans Solo Cycling Race, Evens Stievenart, prepares for one of the longest cycling events in the world, the Race Across America (RAAM). He is competing against the 100 teams from 20 countries who have each proven their abilities previously at at least one significant sporting event.
The goal of this ultra-marathon race is to cross the United States as quickly as possible without stopping. The race starts on the West Coast in Oceanside, California and ends on the East Coast in Annapolis, Maryland, totalling 5000 km and crossing 14 states.
Since its inauguration in 1982, no Frenchman has won this insane race whose popularity continues to grow despite the evident danger.
This year Evens Stievenart decided to compete as a duo, with his teammate and friend Jean-Luc Perez and plans on competing solo in 2020 or 2021.
This is an intense physical challenge which involves riding 5,000 kilometers, precisely 1,300 km more than for the Tour de France, with no less than 51,000 meters of steep elevation gains without stopping. The two athletes hope to break the duo race record which is currently 6 days and 10 hours or a 31.6 km/h average.
In order to tackle this challenge, which requires consuming over 12,000 calories daily, Evens Stievenart and Jean Luc Perez underwent an intensive training programme and built a strong support team around them, made up of 13 technical and media professionals.
- Chief Crew: overall coordination and race strategy
- Strategist / data analyst : analysis of previous records, live analysis of each cyclist’s performance during the race and simultaneous pace adjustments, as well as a nutritional study which tracks and centralizes each athlete’s nutrient input
- Drivers (around the clock rotations. 4 vans for the team which will follow the cyclists and one 1 van for the media staff)
Not to mention the support of his loyal sponsor, Christophe Février, founder and president of Les Manufactures Février.
For the first time, Evens will ride under the brand HELLIO, the new branch of the company’s energy savings department.
Even though the current duo record, held by an Anglo / American team, sets the bar high with 6 days and 10 hours, time and time again, Evens Stievenart never ceases to amaze us with his passion for breaking records.
« I want to be the best version of myself ». It is with these words, full of modesty, that the Le Mans Solo Cycling world champion sums up his incredible feat of August 2017. Covering 950 km in 24 hours and 7 minutes, Evens not only shattered the race record, which was 921 km, but above all, he beat his own 2016 record by 100 km.
Evens begins the Race Cross America with the same frame of mind: « Setting the goal of becoming the best version of yourself, without comparing yourself to others, is without a doubt one of the most powerful driving forces behind challenging yourself and fulfilling your dreams. In any case, it’s what motivates me to push myself further and further during each race. »
His proud sponsor, Christophe Février, president du groupe Les Manufactures Février states :
« Evens is an athete who possesses a unique will and focus as well as a remarkable character. In addition to being a top athlete, he is an ambitious and determined man with rare qualities. I hope that his example will continue to inspire us both within and without the company, shaking up the status quo and creating opportunities for individuals to take action and achieve their goals ».
